Introduction
A few weeks ago, we had heard news that one of our old shopping malls was going to be demolished to make way for the construction of a new MRT line. Most of the building's tenants had since closed up shop and left the building, leaving most of the units shuttered save for a seedy cinema, KTV lounge and a handful of residents staying on the upper floors.
In such a fast developing and land scarce country like Singapore, it's rare to find abandoned spaces of any kind, so we absolutely had to jump on the opportunity to create art in this "historic" building which had been such a prominent part of the Chintatown landscape since it opened for business in 1969.
This series of beautiful yet haunting images - a departure from my usual style of dance photography - pays homage to an ageing building that would soon vanish from our city skyline forever. The muted colours, moody lighting and Natasha's edgy poses serve as a reflection of the building's soul now devoid of life save for the flickering fluorescent lights illuminating the many empty corridors where the lifeblood of shoppers once flowed.
